Crazy Pictures of Storms from around the World

Crazy Pictures of Storms
Lightning in Zirje, Slovenia

Extreme weather includes unusual, severe or unseasonal weather; weather at the extremes of the historical distribution—the range that has been seen in the past. Often, extreme events are based of a location’s recorded weather history and defined as lying in the most unusual ten percent. In recent years some extreme weather events have been attributed to human-induced global warming, with studies indicating an increasing threat from extreme weather in the future.

Frightening Phenomenons of the Coming Storm

Storm is coming
Storm is coming – San Juan Del Sur, Nica

Nature is unbelievably beautiful, but sometimes she strikes fear in the hearts of man when her power amasses into thunderstorms from hell, towering infernos of rotating wind, pounding hail, and savaging supercells that spin out of control into meteorological menaces. The dark clouds warn us of impending doom, but some adrenaline junkie storm chasers go toward the danger in the name of science.

Powerful shock waves in lighthouses

Powerful Waves
Powerful Waves

Waves are the forward movement of the ocean's water due to the oscillation of water particles by the frictional drag of wind over the water's surface.
Waves have crests (the peak of the wave) and troughs (the lowest point on the wave). The wavelength, or horizontal size of the wave, is determined by the horizontal distance between two crests or two troughs. The vertical size of the wave is determined by the vertical distance between the two. Waves travel in groups called wave trains.

Dust Devil images

Dust Devil
Dust Devil
A dust devil is a strong, well-formed, and relatively long-lived whirlwind, ranging from small (half a meter wide and a few meters tall) to large (more than 10 meters wide and more than 1000 meters tall). The primary vertical motion is upward. Dust devils are usually harmless, but can on rare occasions grow large enough to pose a threat to both people and property.

Scary Sandstorm
Scary Sandstorm
Sand storm or dust storm is a meteorological phenomenon common in arid and semi-arid regions. Dust storms arise when a gust front or other strong wind blows loose sand and dirt from a dry surface. Particles are transported by saltation and suspension, a process that moves soil from one place and deposits it in another.

Eruption Volcano Eyjafjallajökull 2010

Eruption Volcano Eyjafjallajökull
Eruption Volcano Eyjafjallajökull
In April 2010, seismic activity was detected in the volcano area, with thousands of small earthquakes (mostly magnitude 1–2 on the Richter magnitude scale, with only a couple greater than 3 magnitude) 7–10 kilometres (4.3–6.2 mi) beneath the volcano. On 26 February 2010, unusual seismic activity along with rapid expansion of the Earth's crust was registered by the Meteorological Institute of Iceland. This gave geophysicists evidence that magma was pouring from underneath the crust into the magma chamber of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano and that pressure stemming from the process caused the huge crustal displacement at Þorvaldseyri farm. The seismic activity continued to increase and from 3–5 March, close to 3,000 earthquakes were measured at the epicentre of the volcano.

Waterspout
Powerful Waterspout

A waterspout is an intense columnar vortex (usually appearing as a funnel-shaped cloud) that occurs over a body of water, connected to a cumuliform cloud. In the common form, it is a non-supercell tornado over water. While it is often weaker than most of its land counterparts, stronger versions spawned by mesocyclones do occur. Waterspouts do not suck up water; the water seen in the main funnel cloud is actually water droplets formed by condensation. Waterspouts have a five-part life cycle: formation of a dark spot on the water surface, spiral pattern on the water surface, formation of a spray ring, development of the visible condensation funnel, and ultimately decay.

The most fascinating photos Supercells Storm by Camille Seaman

Supercell Storm
Supercell Storm by Camille Seaman

American photographer Camille Seaman has spent a lot of time exploring the world and finding connections between humans and nature. Many of her works evoke an emotional relationship between the viewer and the dramatic moments captured within the natural world. The Big Cloud series features a handful of storms, specifically called supercells, that Seaman has chased throughout the middle part of the United States, ranging from Texas to North Dakota. While most of us would be turning and running in the opposite direction from these dark and gloomy skies, Seaman puts herself at high risk in order to document the dusty winds stirring right before her—and now our—eyes.
